Although born and raised in Boston, he has lived in Montreal most of his adult life, except for a one-year stint working at an ad agency in Paris. Though he initially trained as a writer and translator (English/French), he more often wears the hat of director, producer, singer and/or theatre administrator.
Stephen’s public career as a playwright began in 1984, when his play “Real Men” was presented in French under the title “Un homme, un vrai” at Calixa-Lavallée Hall in Montreal. His most recent work for the stage is “My Little Rant”, an original one-man musical that he wrote and performed in English to extremely positive reviews at the 2006 Montreal Fringe Festival.
The holder of a Master of Science in print journalism from Boston University, Stephen will receive his graduate diploma in event management and fundraising from Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business in early 2007. His Bachelor of Arts degree from Tufts University included a double major in theatre and comparative religion. As a visiting scholar at Yale University, he focused on writing for theatre and film, and there completed an irreverent screen treatment of Choderlos de Laclos’ classic, “Les liaisons dangereuses”.
For five years, Stephen edited a bilingual (French/English) bi-monthly corporate magazine that was distributed across Canada to over 220,000 subscribers. He has also been a terminology consultant to NetClub, one of the world’s largest French-language on-line dating and friendship websites. His advanced writing training in French also includes the Université de Montréal’s Cours du français écrit. A lover of all periods and styles of musical theatre, Stephen is a proud member of the Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. His stage credits include over twenty different productions, such as “Oh, Coward!”, “Music of the Stars”, “Inspire Me: Songs of Inspiration from Broadway”, “Carousel”, “A Little Night Music” and “The Great Houdini.” As an Episcopalian and former altar boy in real life, he treasures his association with the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre. |
